Amma Asante Wins Pioneering Director Award

Award-winning filmmaker Amma Asante will receive a GUBA Pioneering Director Award on 4th July 2015. Every year, the Ghana UK Based Achievement (GUBA) Awards celebrate and honour successful Ghanaian individuals and businesses in the UK.

This year the event will be taking place at the Hilton Metropole Hotel in Edgware, London.

Belle (2013) – the second, and most recent, film directed by Asante – opened to phenomenal success and was highly critically acclaimed.

The period drama won several awards, including a NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Independent Motion Picture, leading Asante to earn the title of one of CNN’s Leading Women of 2014.

Asante won the BAFTA’s Carl Foreman Award for Special Achievement in a debut film by a British filmmaker for her first film A Way of Life in 2004. The critically-acclaimed film won 17 international awards in total, including the FIPRESCI Prize for Best Film and the Grand Jury prize for Best Dramatic Feature in World Cinema, both at the 2005 Miami International Film Festival.

London-born Asante started her career as a child actress, as a regular in Grange Hill and also appearing in Channel 4’s Desmonds and BBC 1’s Birds of a Feather. In her late teens, Asante progressed from acting to screenwriting, founding her own production company, Tantrum Films, and writing and producing Brothers and Sisters, an urban drama for BBC2.

To celebrate her continued dedication and success, Amma Asante will be honoured with a GUBA Black Star Pioneering Director Award. Black Star Awards are an integral part of the GUBA celebrations, existing especially to honour consistent, long-term achievement of Ghanaians in the UK.

The recipients of the Black Star Awards were chosen by GUBA’s advisory board; including Jon Benjamin, British High Commissioner  to Ghana; John Blavo, founder of Blavo & Co Solicitors Ltd; and Jonathan Howard, CEO of the Business Council for Western and Southern Africa.

Alongside the Black Star Awards, there are three voting categories: Artist Extraordinaire Award, GUBA Humanitarian Award and GUBA Young and Talented Award and winners will be unveiled on the night.

GUBA 2015 promises to be an entertaining and inspirational night, filled with live music, great food and a glamorous ambience.
