THE REAL HERO OF #REPUHW16 WAS DJ VYRUSKY

Barely a week after he took home the Events DJ Award at the Ghana DJ Awards, DJ Vyursky showed up in Kumasi for one of Ghana’s Biggest Events.

It was the first major event he was playing after the award and all eyes were on him.

It is one thing being good at what you do, but the moment you walk home with a physical proof of your excellence, you need to consistently prove you deserve it and if there is one thing that Vyrusky did over the Republic Hall Week weekend, it was consistently showing fans and critics alike why there is no doubt that the award belonged to him.

Epilogo has for a very long time become the first major event of the weekend of fun and excitement that is Repu Hall Week. It sets the tone for the rest of the events and this year’s Epilogo lived up to expectation. Other very impressive DJs like Sleek, Sheldon and Shaggy Unltd were there to get the crowd into varying moods for the party.

But anyone who was at Georgia on that Thursday night will never forget the euphoria, that washed over the audience with every track change that Vyrusky made. It is amazing experiencing it all in the crowd but it is an incredible thing seeing it from Vyrusky’s eye view from the DJ booth.

VGMA Board Must Continue To Listen

I know it is not easy at all to be a member of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards Board; I strongly believe that, the experience of being a part of the Board brings some terrible feelings when the nominees list is released.

This is because people from all walks of life get the opportunity to talk, rant and dissect it with different mind-set to suit their individual understanding.

“For an industry person and from where I sit, I think they did a lousy job. There were some petty mistakes that for about 15 years of doing this, they shouldn’t be making.

It is a human institution, but then, when the mistakes are too petty, some of us will talk about it.”

“If they had done worse jobs in the past, they could have done a better job because as we move forward, we need to learn.

In the past, research was one of the most difficult things to do but these days, there is the internet. You can go online and check some of these things or speak to experts who are knowledgeable. Today, the research instruments or avenues are plenty,”

VGMA NOMINEES JAM HITS HO FOR THE FIRST TIME

This year seems to be a year of firsts for the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, take the way the nominees were released this year for instance.

This year, organizers dared to do something different; the nominees were released every hour on the hour across media platforms. Organizers, Charterhouse, wanted to create a social media buzz but what they got was a total media shutdown on radio, television and online.

The second first is about to hit the people of HO. The nominees jam train after having toured Accra, Koforidua, Kumasi, Tamale and Cape Coast is finally going to HO. Yes!! HO finally gets the chance to witness electrifying performances from the VGMA nominees.

The nominees jam train is ready, it’s gearing up and fueling up to make its next stop in the Volta City but it’s not going empty handed. Every town that has hosted the nominees jam before will attest to one thing, the train never comes empty handed. It is always full of nominees who give off noting but the best.

The nominees always see the nominees jam as a way to first of all justify their nomination and also to rally massive support for votes. So it’s a really big deal for them and they never disappoint, no matter the genre, every nominee steps up to the plate delivers.

Finally, the PR for StreamLine Records and acting manager for Sista Afia, Bossu Kule speaks about the recent art the Kro Kro No hitmaker exhibited at the YFM Area Codes Jam in Kumasi.

Bossu Kule in a recent interview says, he sees nothing wrong with what Sista Afia did on stage. Explaining himself, Bossu Kule said, Sista Afia might have done that out of so much excitement or perhaps, to save the show from its boredom state.

His words below...

We never planned for her to be kissing on stage but as an entertainer, we need to understand what she did from that aspect. According to our representatives who traveled with her to perform that day, various circumstances occurred that left the crowd bored and dull.

[Guest Feature ] #CGMovieReview : An Hour With The Shrink Review - Frustrating And Underdeveloped

I wish I had three hours with a shrink to get over the two hours I just spent watching “An Hour With The Shrink”. What the Shrink even has to do with the storyline I have no idea. It appears that the character is just being used as a sounding board to fill in the gaps not being explained in normal film time.

Coming from Heat Factory ICI, whose previous titles include Diana’s Verdict and Hourglass, this film is far from the “Nollywood Chart cracker” it was promised to be.

The lead character is a confused man who comes across more like a sufferer of Bipolar Disorder than of any previous emotional trauma. In fact, it could have been a groundbreaking storyline if the possibility of Bipolar Disorder actually was explored rather than whatever male-chauvinistic-jealous-guilt mysogyny was offered up in its place.

The skeleton was there for a good film but unfortunately the pantomime of Nollywood quickly kicked in. Half sentences and unnecessary cliffhangers, pointless cameos for the sake of a star-studded cast. With regards to the storyline high marks cannot be awarded. It didn’t feel original or compelling.

Just as in the films of the old days, we are gifted with the long drawing out of a script until the final minutes when absolutely everything happens and ties that were never alluded to suddenly bind random characters together.

That can be forgiven in earlier Nollywood, or with veteran actors, it cannot be accepted with the stock this director had to play with. I suggest given the cast that the production team was able to sign-up, they should have spent more time finding better writers to compete with “new” Nollywood. This script was just not made for fee-paying 2016 African cinema-goers.

The acting is difficult to assess given the quality (or lack of it) in the script. The entire sitting was filled with forced tears and emotionally unstable characters. Every scene is on the edge of a breakdown. What heavens for?! In addition, IrokoTV list just one actor, Ngozi Ezeonu, in the cast, but she is not there, do not be deceived.

This film stars lead actor Gbenro Ajibade as Emmanuel, the husband; lead actress Annie Macaulay Idibia as Ima, the wife; KC Ejelonu as the Shrink, two ladies unnamed in the titles or the credits who play very critical roles in the development of the story, Amber played by Monique Samuel and Rose, played by Cynthia Shallom.

Finally, Segun Arinze is that heavyweight inclusion which I guess validates the production of this film. It’s a small cast and a small crew, such is the beauty of Nigerian films. In fact, so few was the crew that they left just 15 seconds at the end of the film for credits, the cast was not even credited.

Kudos to the DOP Emmanuel Imeh Frank and Editor David Psalms (Jassy) for what looks like an attempt to control the cinematographic quality of the film. The titles and the credits were a disappointment however. The opening titles were frankly boring.

Each cast member’s name simply wiping across on a black screen with weird unsettling music in the background harkening back to old Nollywood. And to finish the film David Psalms the Editor, decided to post his phone number in size 72 font in the credits which was a faux pas on his front.

The sound seemed to slip in and out of an echo not just caused by our cemented walls and tiled floors--perhaps something funny occurred in post-production which they couldn’t fix.

It feels necessary to end with some positives so that I am not accused of being a hater. Firstly, the film is 120 mins long, which conforms to western conventions of a movie and is a drift away from the 'epicly' lengthened nature of Nollywood films.

I personally don’t mind those, so seeing this shorter film as a positive is purely subjective to who you are and the time you have. Secondly, the film begins at the shrinks office. In this sense, it was in good keeping with the title. The film is currently available on IrokoTV, if you get a subscription. Watching it, is not emphatically recommended.
