South African Songs – Scandinavian Voices Baobab Sisters On Tour In South Africa

With a tight and star-studded program the Danish vocal group Baobab Sisters is visiting South Africa for the longest tour in the history of the group.

Until the 1st of October, Baobab Sisters will be on tour in South Africa. The Danish vocal group sing South African songs and will do concerts in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban and Cape Town as well as other venues in KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and in the North West Province.

The group is presenting an exciting program including a meeting with Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, singing at the traditional and festive Zulu Reed Ceremony, doing concerts with the vocal trio The Soil and the male quartet Complete, participating in the SATMA music award show and as always gathering inspiration meeting old and new friends.

We have had a yearly tour in South Africa for many years, but this one beats all of them in terms of length and content. It seems that the Baobab Sisters is becoming well-known in South Africa, opening new doors and therefore we believe it is going to be an amazing, very exciting and most of all busy tour this year,” Musical Director, Rikke Forchhammer says about the trip.

On this tour, the Baobab Sisters will bring a brand new album recorded in Denmark. On this record, you will find 18 interpretations of beautiful South African songs – both traditional and more modern jazz- and pop music.

It will be presented in South Africa during the tour together with another album recorded with Mbongeni Ngema, known for the Broadway musical production ‘Sarafina’.

Rikke Forchhammer founded Baobab Sisters in September 2009. The group consists of eight professional female singers with Rikke as the Musical Director.

The group has specialized in singing South African music in local languages such as Zulu, Xhosa and Sotho.

The repertoire consists of a variety of music from traditional songs - from political songs written under Apartheid, to new pop melodies about universal topics such as love and sorrow.

The group has toured South Africa 6 times before and this is the 7th. You can catch the Baobab Sisters performing at the Joburg Theatre on Saturday alongside The Soil.
