[Guest Feature ] #CGMovieReview : Schemers

This film is a pleasant surprise and it is well worth watching right until the end. It starts off as an attempt at arty, deep film-craft and quickly descends into familiar Nollywood shots, random shouting and weirdness.

Initially I was inclined to write “Don’t dwell on the actual production of the film, it is nothing to write home about” but actually as the film progresses it improves.

The story follows two sisters, one who is quite obviously their parents’ favourite. She ends up getting married first and running the family company but she is not the eldest sister and this causes a little resentment in her sister. Whilst they are growing as two independent and successful women, a businessman has orchestrated for his sons to con the sisters out of their inheritance.

It isn’t clear what the motivation is against these very sisters but it becomes clear over time that this is a long thought out plot which we come to meet at the climax of it all when the businessman can no longer wait for his sons to play out the con-script.

Costuming for me was quite peculiar. The makeup on the lead actresses was somewhat caked. At numerous times throughout the film the actresses faces were starkly different colours from the rest of their bodies and this was extremely frustrating.

The only silver lining to this is to suggest that this is an accurate depiction of those many women in Nigeria who wear terrible make up. And the night gown worn by the leading lady was more appropriate for a dinner event, I mean who sleeps in beads and sequins?

There are some harrowing scenes that had me sitting up thinking “woah, ok so we’re watching this are we?” Kudos to the special effects make up artist, because that scene was pretty realistic and the characters were well designed.

The film was full of so many twists, just as you think the writer has made a mistake in the script the next scene throws all your conclusions to the wind and proves you wrong. Watch it now on iroko and let us know what you think.
