The winners of this year’s DStv Eutelsat Star Awards were announced during a ceremony held in Nairobi, Kenya, that also celebrated the rising student interest in science and technology.
The fifth edition of the DStv Eutelsat Star Awards, organized by MultiChoice and Eutelsat, reached a record participation with nearly 2,000 entries from 18 countries. At the ceremony, Ayawen Asuinura, a student of Presbyterian Boys Secondary (Legon) was named 1st place in the essay category.
For producing a thought provoking essay, Ayawen Asuinura from Ghana has won a trip to Paris and onwards to a launch site to witness a rocket blast into space to place a satellite into orbit. This is the first win in the essay category for Ghana that has already produced two winners in the poster category. In the essay category, students were asked to interpret the quote by Socrates “Man must rise above the Earth, to the top of the atmosphere and beyond, for only thus will he fully understand the world in which he lives” and to show how satellites help understand and take care of our planet.
As part of his prize, Ayawen’s school Presbyterian Boys Secondary School (PRESEC) was rewarded with a fully installed DStv Expora, a TV set, free access to the DStv Education Package and training for staff in order to align the use of various program for the syllabus.
At the handing over, Ms. Anne Sackey Marketing and Public Relations Manager for MultiChoice Ghana, who stood in for Mr. Cecil Sunkwa Mills, the General for MultiChoice Ghana, stated how proud she was that a student from Ghana had won the Essay award for the first time - two winners having previously won the poster category. She also congratulated the teachers, and the Assistant Headmistress of PRESEC, Madam Dora Dankwa Darko, who was present to receive the award on behalf for the school, for their continual support to the students with regards to extracurricular academic activities like the DStv Eutelsat Star Awards.
Also present at the handing over was Nii Amah Dagadu the Regional Marketing Manager for MultiChoice Western and Central Regions and an old student of the school, Ayawen’s parents and several students and teachers of the school.
The DStv Eutelsat Star Awards, an ongoing partnership between Eutelsat and MultiChoice Africa, is aimed to stimulate interest in science and technology and to inspire innovative thinking among secondary and high school students across the continent. The Awards have inspired creative thinking among students and created awareness on how science and technology can be applied to everyday life as well as the many ways that satellites already impact the development of the African continent.
Multichoice also supports other deserving CSI projects and for five (5) years, MultiChoice Ghana has supported the Community Bee level of the Spelling Bee Competition, which is organized by the Young Educators Foundation, a local NGO dedicated to improving education in Ghana. The company has also invested in over 100 Ghanaian High Schools as part of the company’s Corporate Social Investment (CSI) Initiative by donating DStv hardware and TV sets to senior high schools. The installations are part of a broad MultiChoice community development strategy to leverage company assets and expertise toward development and growth of communities in which the company operates. MultiChoice provides the schools with the equipment as well as access to the DStv Education Bouquet, the Bouquet combines the sound and imagery of television to support teaching and learning.
A call to entry for the next DStv Eutelsat Star Awards and the Multichoice Resource Centres will be announced in due course.
