The Ghana arm of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA-Ghana) has extended a warm message of congratulation to Chief Justice nominee Her Ladyship Justice Sophia Akuffo who has been named by President Akufo-Addo to replace Chief Justice Georgina Wood who retires in June 2017.
A long serving Supreme Court judge, she becomes the 13th person to occupy the enviable position upon parliament’s approval.

On behalf of the Ghana Chapter of International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA-Ghana) we extend congratulations to you on your recent nomination as the next Chief Justice of Ghana.
The commitment and leadership you have shown over many years as the immediate past President of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, as a member of the Governing Committee of the Commonwealth Judicial Education Institute, Chairperson of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Task Force and other progressive senior roles will undoubtedly serve the Judiciary’s determination to renew faith and enhance pride in the judicial system. From the long list of achievements to which many have acknowledged, there is no doubt that you will carry out your duties as a Chief Justice with fairness, honesty and integrity, when approved by Parliament.
As a committed and proud supporter of the Judiciary, FIDA-Ghana looks forward to working with you towards the realization of women’s empowerment and gender equality. Many of FIDA’s strategic priorities for the years ahead – providing legal aid in mediation and counselling services to indigent women and children, providing court representation for women and providing mobile legal aid outreaches in rural areas to women – resonate with several of the Judiciary’s own priorities.
In the past few years, FIDA has advocated for legal reform, created and raised legal awareness on the rights of women and children in Ghana. In doing so, we have significantly contributed in narrowing the gender gaps in the Ghanaian society. We hope FIDA and the Judiciary will have opportunities to collaborate in addressing gender inequality and child abuse in Ghana.
