Ghana looks likely to win the 2017 Miss Perth Africa pageant, following the selection of a 19-year-old Human Biology student to represent the West African country for the first time.
Miss Gertrude Mortty, of the Curtin University in Perth, Western Australia, goes into the competition with not only the 3Bs – i.e. beauty, brains and body – which the pageant emphasises. She carries along a worthwhile goal she intends to pursue should she win.
“I want to use the platform to create awareness on how to properly groom our bodies and other issues concerning the health of women such as the increasing rate of breast cancer,” she said.
The former student of Sacred Heart Senior High School at Nsoatre in the Brong Ahafo Region of Ghana, indicated that her participation is to inspire all African women, especially those in the diaspora, to be confident in their strides to reach greater heights.
She explained, “We all do have ambitions and career goals. I am, for instance, hoping to turn a medical doctor someday. “This is what I find admirable about this pageant, because it gives us, young African women in Western Australia, a platform to explore our talents and use our positions as ambassadors to inspire others,” she quipped.
Asked about her chances in the competition, Gertrudice DeeWhiz McEras – as she is known on Facebook – said she was optimistic of winning the ultimate.
“I learnt this is the first time a Ghanaian is participating; that in itself is a motivation for me to go for the ultimate. I am confident, so particularly I expect every Ghanaian to vote for me by liking my picture on facebook” she indicated.
Gertrude is in competition with 12 other contestants from Kenya, DR Congo, Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Sudan, Guinea Conakry, South Africa, Mauritius and Burundi. The final event is slated for Saturday, the May 27th, at Astor Theatre, 659 Beaufort St, Mount Lawley, WA.
