Amma Asante’s Critically Acclaimed Movie, ‘Belle’ Finally Screens In Ghana On September 11th

After an unsuccessful attempt to release the critically acclaimed costume-drama, Belle in Ghana some months ago, Ghanaians can now look forward to the official release of the movie at the Silverbird Cinemas on September 12. Belle, a drama directed by Amma Asante, a British screenwriter, film director, and former actress. Amma Asante was born in London to Ghanaian immigrant parents; her father was an accountant, and her mother ran the family-owned African deli.

With Amma Asante’s Ghanaian connection, producers of Belle are keen on how well the movie will do in Ghana. The New York Times said ‘“as irresistible as it is moving”; Screen Daily also said “‘Belle’ is a triumph with a radiant star-making performance”; and Oprah Winfrey posted online, “I loved the #BelleMovie so much I invited cast to lunch at my house. GuGu Mbatha-Raw is a rising star! ”

Belle is inspired by the 1779 painting of Dido Elizabeth Belle beside her cousin Lady Elizabeth Murray at Kenwood House, which was commissioned by their great-uncle, William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield, then Lord Chief Justice of England. Very little is known about the life of Dido Belle, who was the illegitimate mixed-race daughter of Mansfield’s nephew.

She was born in the West Indies and entrusted to the care of Mansfield and his wife. The fictional film centres on Dido’s relationship as a young woman with an aspiring lawyer; it is set at a time of legal significance as a court case is heard on what became known as the Zong massacre, when slaves were thrown overboard from a slave ship and the owner filed with his insurance company for the losses.

VIDEO: Ghana-Based Nigerian Musician Eze Jabs Obour, MUSIGA & GHAMRO, “They Are Not Doing Well”

Blame here, blame there! Ghana-based Nigerian musician, Eze, has schooled MUSIGA president, Bice Osei Kufour (Obour), on how to deal with the body’s many problems.

In an interview at his Dansoman studio in Accra, the organizer of the Loud in Accra concert sought to question the organizational acumen of the body’s structure, insisting they’ve done little to help the average musician.

“They are not doing well”, he said when asked to speak briefly on the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) and Ghana Music Rights Organisation of Ghana (GHAMRO).

“I’m blaming it on the structure of the industry so far. They are not doing so well. The way I expected MUSIGA and GHAMRO to play their role, they are rather deviating from the points.”

Eze adds: “If I’m supposed to be given that opportunity, which of course I will not adhere to it because of criticisms and so on, I would rather play a backyard role like the way I started from the music and promotion.”

According to him, Ghana is gifted with music talents but the industry has failed to indentify and take advantage of it. This, he said should be blamed on the fact that, the appropriate authorities have failed to tackle the basic problems in the industry.

“Ghana is blessed with music and we refuse to identify that… if you go to Nigeria or other developed country to be able to decide who leads in a year its being measured by the number of CDs you sold, even in the States, even in UK, everywhere.”

After a year, Kwabena Kwabena has come out to say “Adult Music is not a profane song”. He said this on Neat FM’s entertainment show.

“I am very sad. With what is going on, people will think ‘Adult Music’ is a demonic song. It is sad. If you understand the Twi language very well, you will know that all I said in the song was just Twi.

With the ones that we thought could pose a problem, we used metaphors and moreover if you are an adult then you are an adult. Let’s promote love,”

George Kwabena Adu further added that

According to The Cable, the dissolution of the marriage between Christ Embassy Church founder, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, and his wife, Rev. Anita Odegwa Oyakhilome, has entered the final phase.

The wife is seeking divorce on the grounds of “unreasonable behaviour” and “adultery”. She outlined several allegations against the pastor which cannot publish for legal reasons. The divorce case, with Suit No FD14D01650, was filed on April 9, 2014 at Divorce Section A, Central Family Court, First Avenue House, High Holborn, London, UK, on Anita’s behalf by Attwaters Jameson Hill Solicitors, a full-service law firm with expertise in commercial law and a strong consumer focus in family, wills and estate, personal injury law and medical negligence.

Efforts to reconcile the popular couple, whose church is one of the biggest denominations in Nigeria and has branches all over world, have failed. They have two teenage daughters, Sharon and Charlyn." Continue...

A Piece of Peace: Sticks and stones

Welcome to this weeks Piece of Peace. Today I would like to share with you on the topic: STICKS AND STONES
There is a basic fundamental need we all have as humans to belong to a social group and to be accepted by other people. This fundamental need means we consistently crave the comfort that our social circle brings. It means that, as we grow up, our friendship circles become more and more imbedded in our lives.

They help shape our moral fabric, they determine to an extent the levels of happiness we exercise and they shape our opinions on how well or not we are doing in life. Our need to belong and to feel accepted forms the cornerstone of the level of success we feel we have attained. For example, for most people, success does not really mean a lot to us, unless society validates our efforts.

Thus if everyone can see and acknowledge that the new sports car that you have purchased is impressive, then we are more likely to be excited about our success. This validation need we have means that, we are consistently bombarded with differing thoughts on how we should live our lives. People are temperamental. They are unpredictable.

Today you may be the best thing they have ever seen, but tomorrow those same people will treat you like a plague.

You simply cannot rely on public opinion to validate the progress you are making in life. It is the surest way to fail. There was once a time that Michael Jackson was hailed by everyone as the greatest and most amazing talent ever seen. Those same people called him a pedophile and mentally unstable at a later stage. The validation we want can only come from within.

Miss Malaika 2014 Now Premieres August 31st

After witnessing the auditioning session for this year’s edition of the Miss Malaika beauty reality series, one is left in no doubt that beauty pageants and the Miss Malaika Ghana pageant by extension has come to stay and the exciting sessions will start airing on Sunday August 31st at 8:00 pm on GhOne TV .

The turn out for the Accra auditions which was held at GhOne Studios a couple of weeks ago was not only phenomenal but hugely impressive as the caliber of contestants that turned up to be auditioned by the three judges – William Asiedu, Rodney and Ama Nettey ( Winner, Miss Malaika Ghana 2010) was very high.

The Judges had their job cut out for them as they had the duty of vetting each of the contestants in turn and trim the initial number of about 500 to about a hundred beautiful young women.

16 ladies will eventually emerge out of the process to compete in the nearly 13 weeks of intensive competition. Watching the ladies eagerly join the auditions train, one wonders why so many young ladies find the Miss Malaika pageant an excellent avenue to explore their potentials.

It has been observed that Malaika acts like a finishing school for many of these young ladies who enter the competition. The weekly tasks and the activities planned around the pageant especially the international tourism opportunity has certainly acted as a pull factor for many a beautiful young woman. The Miss Malaika pageant is still the only pageant in Ghana that sends the ten finalists on an exciting international trip.

Samuel Gyabah Wins Viasat 1's Game Changer Challenge

Viasat1 has announced Samuel Gyabah as the winner of the maiden edition of Game Changers competition, a project aimed at bringing a change to children’s education in Ghana.

The project, which is a Viasat1 Corporate Responsibility initiative with partnership from Reach for Change, was announced in May 2014. From almost 300 entries, the project coordinators pruned down to 25, and eventually to the five finalists.

The objective was to identify the best individuals running initiatives to improve education in their community. The expectation was to identify passionate individuals who were already doing something even on a small scale but with the ambition to grow.

Samuel is providing clean micro-flush toilets for schools around the country with a focus on sanitation and health education in order to curb absenteeism especially among female students. The toilets are built to breakdown the waste into fertilizer. These toilets are placed with water, which promotes hand washing among school children. He has successfully run a pilot constructing units in schools in Koforidua and now also in Pokuase.

The five successful applicants were provided a platform on Viasat1 to showcase themselves and exhibit their initiatives to the viewing public over a period of six weeks. After the exhibition period, the public then voted through SMS for the most convincing and effective education changing social entrepreneur from Aug 1st through the 23rd.

Lydia Forson’s New Project “A Letter From Adam” Hits The Cinemas In September!

Can’t a person or a movie star decide to stay away from the public domain without people necessarily finding reasons for such a decision? Must we speculate all the time?

Award winning Ghanaian actress Lydia Forson is ready with her first, self-produced/written movie.

"Titled A letter from Adam" , it is the fruit of months of indecisions, struggles, and an eventual urge to do something she had always wanted to.

In a post on Monday, the actress takes us down the road to this day, and how she had to do this at all cost.

The movie which hits the cinemas on September 19th and 20th features Nigeria’s Wale Ojo, Naa Ashorkor Mensah-Doku, Akorja Ejeani-Asiedu and others.

READ Miss Forson’s rather touching story behind ‘A letter from Adam’.

I’ve been trying to write this post for a while now, but I just cant seem to find the right words.

For someone who loves to write and talk as much as I do,this is rare. So I’m going to put down whatever comes into my mind and I hope it makes some kind of sense.

In 2010, I went through a series of challenges in my life that left me struggling to find the will to live. I wasn’t suicidal, far from it, but I just didn’t have the will or desire to do anything. I didn’t go out, cut off friends and turned down jobs. Basically a light had gone off inside of me and I didn’t know how to turn it back on.

I’ve always been a private person and so I didn’t know who to confide in. The few people I did talk to I couldn’t bring myself to tell them everything I was going through.

Africa Will Surely Rise Above Ebola Says Nadia Buari (@B5sNadiaBuari)

A deadly virus has been widespread and affected thousands across the continent but Ghanaian actress Nadia Buari believes Africa will surely rise above the deadly disease.

The ongoing Ebola menace in this side of Africa has indeed caused panic amongst citizens of affected countries and it’s neighboring, meanwhile education on the killer disease has been destabilized.

Sadly, passionate actress has been affected by the inability of authorities to provide essential education on the disease, this prompted her to enlighten her social media following on Ebola.

The actress, just like many others all over the world have in one way or the other raised and continue to raise awareness and spread preventive tips via their various social media platforms.

Nadia who seems optimistic of the cure and extinction of the deadly outbreak took to social networking site Twitter stating;

“Africa will surely rise above Ebola. But In the mean time, pls let’s keep it safe with our contacts. Prevent, Protect & Project… #NSB“
