Guest Feature: Railway Transportation Will Boost Ghana’s Tourism

Anytime I see deterioration of heritage attractions, my-heart bleeds.

Why can’t Ghana re-develop our railway system to carry large and heavy goods and people from one city to the other?

What about the heavy duty trucks from Burkina Faso, Niger and the other land-locked countries whose cargo trucks destroy our roads, coupled with the numerous killings of people on this Kumasi–Accra Highway all the time?

Well, from reliable sources, rail transport, is more fuel efficient than road transport in the USA and their system has a rail freight of 63 per cent more fuel efficient than road transport.

According to the National Road Safety Campaign office, road accidents account for more than a third of the deaths in the country every month; taking into cognisance malaria and other diseases that kill us.

The number of road accidents and their attendant deaths and injuries could have all been avoided if we had turn to the railway transport system which is much safer; if compared to all the other means of transport.

However Ghana focuses more on road transport to the neglect of the railway, in addition to our poor maintenance culture.

Railway transportation will boost Ghana’s domestic tourism drive.

The high population growth has led to greater demand for public transport which shows no sign of subsiding hence pressure on the transport system is likely to increase substantially. If resources and efforts are not directed to deal with the problems of public transportation, the country will continue to have transport systems that fails to achieve their goals.

Imagine a Railway system from Accra to Cape Coast , Sekondi , Takoradi, Tarkwa , Axim and Elubo on the Western Rail line ,

From the Eastern Railway line Accra to Tema , Ho , Keta and Aflao.

And the Central Railway line from Accra to Nsawam , Suhum , Nkawkaw , Ejisu , Kumasi, Bekwai , Obuasi , Mampong,Techiman , Sunyani , Tamale, Bolgatanga , Wa and Tumu.

How I wish this was a reality 😉?
