Meet Dark Suburb; Ghana’s First Alternative Rock Band

Ghana’s  first Alternative Rock Band ‘Dark Suburb’ consist of anonymous talented musicians (guitarist, pianist, drummers, singer) who wear skeleton mask as a form of identity.

The band consist of 5 musicians and a poet, who acts as their Chief Priest and band leader. They have been able to combine rock with all forms of African style of music.

The group have attributed their continental growth to the AFRIMA brand. According to their ‘Chief Priest’, “Events like AFRIMA have put us in limelight and we are capitalizing on that.”

“It is very difficult to talk about any opportunity we’ve got without giving a big up to AFRIMA, we’ve met a lot of artiste in and out of Africa through this platform,” The Chief priest expressed this in an interview granted during the 5th AFRIMA World Calendar Unveiling event held on May 21, 2018 in Accra, Ghana.

The masked group have been termed, satanic and occultist due to their appearance, but they have continued to use their music to portray equality amongst humanity, using the skeleton to represent a form of uniformity in all humans irrespective of race, tribe or religion.

Expressing their music from the African perspective, the group is also known to lend their voice to the fight against any form of discrimination, hence, they termed themselves the justice league of Africa in Alternative Rock.

With a wide range of audience in Ghana, UK and U.S. the rock band have rode against tides in their genre of music, being a controversial genre without much follower-ship in the African scene, they have been able to create a presence for rock music in Africa.

Dark Suburb have been nominated twice for the All Africa Music Awards in 2016 for ‘Artiste of the Year’, and in 2017 for ‘Best Male Artiste in Western Africa’.
