Conquerors Victorious In Midweek Clashes Of The Ghana Rugby Club Championship In Cape Coast

A midweek battle between the Conquerors Sporting Club and the two cape coast based teams Griffons RFC and UCC Spartans RFC in the ongoing Ghana Rugby Club Championship (GRCC) ended in favor of Conquerors at the ST. Augustine College School Park in Cape Coast on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The final scores of the two GRCC matches were Conquerors 77-10 UCC Spartans and Conquerors 65-3 Griffons.

Mr. Clement Dennis, owner and head coach of Griffons RFC, said that despite the results he is confident that the CentWest teams will improve with more match experience.

“We unfortunately lack experience and a lot need to be done about our defensive patterns. In addition we need to acquire the right training and playing equipment and need work on negotiating access to better training pitches,” Mr. Dennis said.

There were also  presentations of balls, boots and jerseys to the CentWest Rugby Association and the two Cape Coast based clubs on the day.

Mr. Steve Noi, Tournament Commissioner of the GRCC, presented football boots to the two Cape Coast based clubs on behalf of the President, Mr. Herbert Mensah.

Hon. James Nunoo, a board member of the Ghana Rugby Football Union (GRFU), also presented two sets of jerseys and Rugby balls to the CentWest Rugby Association on behalf of Hon. Rickitte Kweku Hagan, MP for Cape Coast South Constituency.

In an interview with the media, Hon. James Nunu has disclosed that the MP is enthusiastic to offer more help to promote Rugby in Cape Coast because he has seen the sports as a source of employment that can curb the problem of unemployment in his constituency.

Mr. Nunoo also said, “We are very involved in grassroots Rugby development at schools level with the implementation of the World Rugby “Get Into Rugby” programme and we believe that the vision and mission of the GRFU to grow the Rugby Family in Ghana to all parts of the country will become a reality in the not too distant future.”

Week three of the 2015/16 GRCC is scheduled to again be held at the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday 5 December 2015 with a full programme starting at 9:00am and ending at 5:00pm.

The GRCC Tournament Organizers said that all stakeholders are welcome to join the Ghana Rugby Family for a day of entertainment and excitement. Entrance to the event is free of charge.
