My timelines have been filled with questions like ‘who is Kumi Guitar’ and ‘what song did he sing’ since the nominations for the 2014 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards were announced last Saturday, and I expressed my joy at Kumi Guitar’s nominations.
He received nominations for New Artist of the Year and Highlife Song of The Year. Well, Kumi Guitar aka Nana Yaw Kumi is the man behind the song ‘Break In Two’ also known as ’1 litre’. The first time I heard the song I was on my way to one of the events at the Accra International Conference Centre and I liked it immediately.
I had just tuned in halfway into the song and sadly the dj/radio host didn’t mention the title or artist behind it so I kept referring to it as ‘that song’ anytime I tried to tell my colleagues about it. In another car ride a similar thing happened but this time I was able to capture part of the song in a video on instagram, where I told people that Ii liked the song but didn’t have details on it. Soon I found out I wasn’t the only one who liked the song as the comments started to roll in.
Luckily some of my contacts are well informed and soon I got the title and the artist behind the song. So I Googled and luckily got one good download link for the track and I have been playing it ever since. Anyway for those who still don’t know him or the song, check it out the original track below (remix featured Guru), it should ring a bell and yes, he deserves his nomination.
