The male dominance in TV3′sMentor came to an end in the wee hours of Monday, August 19, 2013 when Roselyn Akosua Mantey, popularly called Akos, was adjudged winner of Season VII of the station’s flagship reality show. She beat competition from Gabriel Ansah, populalrly known as Gabby, and Honny Kingsley Theophilus, also known as Honny, to walk away with the sleek Hyndai Accent saloon car. She will also be GH¢7,000 richer and will receive souvenirs from sponsors.
Akos’ performance in the final, held at the Accra International Conference Center (AICC), kept a large section of the audience chorusing her name as winner of the contest, which began with 16 contestants. The night began with performances from Mentor IV winner Michael Kesse Frimpong (Kesse) and Mentor II runner-up Joseph Nii Otu Ankrah, known during his “Mentor days” as Joe but now with showbiz monicker Nii.
After the introduction of the various groups into which this season’s Mentor was categorized, the judges were introduced. The resident judges, Mark Okraku Mantey and Dominic Ansah Asare, were joined by Ivorian music legend Frederic Desire Ehui, popularly called Freddy Meiway, to assess the individual performances of the six finalists.
Before the finalists got on stage, Superintendent of Police (SP) Kofi Sarpong got the atmosphere in the packed auditorium to fever pitch with some of his notable tracks. Gabby was first to perform and before he did, votes were canvassed for him by Stephen Kyei Antwi, a gospel artiste. Contemporary high-life musician Dada KD did same for Benjamin Ashun Cobbina, also known as Kwe-Si. Host of TV3’s Iqra did a similar canvassing for Majeed Tahiru (Majeed) while hiplife artiste Nhyiraba Kojo went in for Charity Decku (Charity). Honny got radio broadcaster Abeiku Aggrey Santana fully behind him while TV3’s Music Music host Root Eye rooted for Akos. The finalists performed in that order. Their performances on stage led to the eviction of Kwe-Si and Majeed and four had to battle for the ultimate.
Two rounds of individual performances – which were not assessed by the judges – left little to choose from between Akos and the others. She had massive support from the audience to the extent that Mark Okraku Mantey expressed fears over verbal attack from fans of the Kumasi-based contestant, if he critiqued her performance to their chagrin.
The Golden Squad member’s performance with one of Ghana’s outstanding female music legends and dancing sensation, evergreen Akosua Agyepong gave the thousands of fans in the main auditorium of AICC their monies’ worth. Gabby’s performance of gospel musician OJ’s Emere Bi Beba, Chairty’s of Wutah PV’s Love of My Life and Honny’s performance with Kofi Bee complemented entertainment on the night dubbed ‘The Peace Agenda’.
Kwaw Kesse and Freddy Meiway, the Zoblazo man, also kept patrons on their feet throughout their performances. But the spotlight remained on the final four as votes, coupled with performances, counted at the end of the day. Akos came first while Gabby and Honny came second and third respectively. Charity took the fourth place. Gabby received a cheque for GH¢6,000 plus souvenirs from sponsors while Honny and Charity go home with GH¢5,000 and GH¢4,000 respectively and sponsors’ souvenirs. Akos becomes the first female contestant to be adjudged winner since the reality show began in 2006.
