2019 Social Media Week Launched In Accra

On Friday, July 26th Interactive Media organised the Social Media Week, Accra 2019 launched it's third edition at the Multichoice Ghana office also known as the DSTV office in Dzorwulu-Accra.

The Social Media Week campaign is a global initiative which emerged from London moving to New York and finding its way to other cities. The Social Media Week (SMW) has 65,000 participants and 20 cities marking the week.

In Ghana, the Interactive Media folks say a 3-day series of activities is in the works set for September 25 to 27 involving brand influencers impacting knowledge during master classes, equipping bloggers to creditably source information for news and generally touching on digital threats and opportunities out there.

According to Kofi Asante; General Manager at Interactive Media, by 2020, estimates suggest there would be 5 billion digital connectivity globally adding there are 5.8 million social media users in Ghana. The SMW19 he continued will avail a platform for storytelling and help in building a progressive society.

The 3-day event will see key note addresses, exhibitions and personal sharing of experiences with Mr. Asante observing Ghana’s 10.32 million online users is a fertile platform for love, business and other possibilities.

“We will bring notables for the master classes and some global experts who will take participants through the advancement of artificial intelligence and augmented reality,” Mr. Kofi revealed adding “there will be 20 keynote addresses, 18 master classes, 12 fireside sessions with each day packed with relevant content.”

Natalie Annan, the Social Media Week Project Coordinator noted this year’s SMW19 will explore various formats of storytelling spanning generic film methods, podcasting and blogging adding master classes will be held to address pertinent issues and stimulate discussions.


“On day one, we will look at news reportage for the Ghanaian media and beyond stressing on the need to be responsible with what is posted for consumption. For brand influencers, the master class will touch on getting noticed by brands and being appealing to them and touching on reach, ROI, engagement and total media value,” Natalie submitted.

Executive Director at Interactive Media; Ekow Thompson observed while the Social Media Week initiative started in 2008 in London and later got replicated in New York, Accra hosted its first SMW three years ago.

and also the aim for this year Social Media Week is to explore the various formats of sharing the Ghanaian narrative on social media through a wide range of activities spread across 3 days in Accra.

It emerged the 3-day event will have sessions at the Accra Mall, DSTV Office, Accra Digital Centre, Silver Bird Cinema. Organisers say relationships will be built with emphasis on small scale businesses using social media to promote their services and wares.


Social Media Week, Accra partners include Citi FM/TV, YFM, Silverbird Cinema, DSTV and others. Its hashtags are #SocialMediaWeekAccra, #SMWAccra and #SMWAccra19.
