The Seventies: A Must-See Documentary Series On Kwesé Know

The 1970s are famous in America for various major events: America’s defeat in the Vietnam War; Nixon’s Watergate disgrace; the Roe vs Wade abortion case; Ayatollah Khomeini’s Iranian Revolution and the stoking of tensions with the Arab world.

Tune in to Kwesé Know (Ch 400) for The Seventies on Wednesday, 21 June at 20:30 CAT.

It was a decade in which the relationship between the developed and developing worlds was re-calibrated, with the latter starting to assert their power and independence. In late April 1975 America beat an undignified retreat from South Vietnam.

The images of Americans hastily clambering aboard helicopters at the US embassy in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) were beamed around the world, denting the confidence and prestige of the world’s most powerful country. In late 1979 radical Iranian students, with the tacit blessing of the Ayatollah Khomeini, kidnapped 52 American diplomats, taking them hostage.

On the home front Americans were exploring alternative religions and lifestyles, as the old values gave way to new ones. Women were empowered, and minority groups started to assert their pride and dignity. Disco was burning up the dance floors all over the country, and norms about sexuality were relaxed. It was a time of heady freedoms, with the inevitable hangover that goes with a good party.

If you’re interested in exploring this fascinating epoch then don’t miss The Seventies, premiering 7 July on Kwesé Know (Ch 400). This documentary series is a follow-up of the much-acclaimed The Sixties (which also aired on Kwesé TV). The Seventies is co-produced by CNN and Playtone – a studio owned by none other than Oscar-winner Tom Hanks.

The production values are outstanding, with incredible footage of the iconic events that defined the decade. Block book your Wednesday evenings, starting 7 July, for Kwesé Know.
