Many diseases occur as a result of the inability to observe basic hygienic conditions either at home, school, during parties at the market place and all other places of human engagement.
In most densely populated communities in Ghana such as Accra, Tema (Newtown, Community 1), Ashaiman and other areas, people are exposed to all kinds of activities at work place and even at home. This comes as a result of poor handwashing among individuals including market women, students and many others. In this regard, the hygienic condition of every individual is very important in preventing many diseases and ailments.
In a bid to improve sanitation and healthy lifestyle, Rural Water Development Project of the Church of Christ (RWDPCOC), Coalition of Non-Governmental Organizations in Tema (CONGOT) and the Miss Tourism Ghana Ambassadors joined the Community Development Unit of Department of Social Welfare and the Community Development Department of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) to celebrate the Global Handwashing Day 2015 under the theme, Raise a Hand for Hygiene.

The Director of Social Welfare at Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA), Mrs. Matilda Mahama, addressed the market women in Tema by calling on citizens to wash their hands with soap as an easy and effective way to do it yourself which will prevent infections and save lives. She added that, every individual can protect themselves, their families, and their communities through effective handwashing with soap.
It requires few resources just as soap and small amount of water which comes with a lot of benefits.
Some members of CONGOT, RWDPCOC and Miss Tourism Ghana Ambassadors engaged in a handwashing demonstration with the market women and men who were made to wash their hands effectively with soap under a running water facility.
Twenty (20) handwashing stands where mounted at vantage points within the Tema Community 1 market and organizers of the Global Handwashing Day supported the market women and passersby on how to wash their hands effectively.
In an interview with some market women, butchers, charcoal sellers, artisans and passersby, they confirmed that they don’t wash their hands effectively as they found it to be normal Ghanaian practice. They agreed to the fact that, handwashing is a positive thing to do and so they will strive to do the right thing henceforth in order to prevent diseases and other ailment.
The Coalition of Non-Governmental Organizations in Tema included, Zerah Foundation, KidWid Foundation, Lamisi Reach-Out Foundation, Environmental Health Club as well as Miss Tourism Ghana 2015 Ambassadors together with staff of the Department of Social Welfare were present to celebrate the Global Handwashing Day.
