The iconic Apollo Theatre in New York on Saturday came alive with a sold out concert featuring Sarkodie and some of Ghana and Africa’s biggest stars, appropriately tagged #SarkodieHistoryInTheMaking.
Present on stage were most of the advertised artists including Kwaw Kese, Bisa Kdei, EL, Banky W and more. Together, they thrilled patrons of the 1500 capacity hall to the best of Afrobeats.
Ahead of the concert, Jesse Weaver Shipley, a professor of anthropology at Haverford College in Pennsylvania and the author of “Living the Hiplife: Celebrity and Entrepreneurship in Ghanaian Popular Music” in an interview with the New York Times said described the event at the Apollo as a test for Ghanaian artists to reach a broader audience;
“The Apollo is really like a test in an exciting way for the Ghanaian artists to reach out to broader audiences and to enter into the American mainstream musical consciousness.”
