Starr 103.5 FM Maiden Summit Kicks Off Today

The maiden Starr 103.5FM Summit takes off today at the Best Western Premier Hotel in Accra.

The series is an initiative intended to offer expert minds on opportunity for thorough discussion on selected themes of national relevance.

The aim of the project is to seize the moment at selected periods to get the nation thinking deeply around issues which enjoy little media attention.

The first Summit dubbed: “Ghana’s Petroleum Pricing Formula - making sense of the puzzle,” is scheduled to begin at 2.30pm on May 28th, 2015.

The resource persons are John Attafuah, a former CEO of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Dr Mohammed Amin Adam, Executive Director of ACEP and Duncan Amoah, Executive Secretary, Chamber of Petroleum Consumers.
The topic for discussion is timely following the recent fuel price increment. Until recently, fuel prices stayed unchanged from the 4th quarter of last year through the 1st Quarter of this year, despite a fall in crude prices worldwide prompting demands by consumers for a reduction in prices. However, a few days ago, fuel prices went up by 9 percent driven mainly by the cedis’ depreciation, rising prices of finished products and crude oil.

Despite explanations and justifications, the public sentiment appears to be that, the increasing prices when inputs go up and keeping prices stable when the reverse happens is improper.

This sentiment plugs into past proposals that the formula needs review.

The Summit’s aim therefore is to assemble a team of resource persons to reflect on how we carry out the business of determining fuel prices, and examine if there are suitable options.

We therefore believe that the reasons itemised above and timing, provide a useful opportunity for us to devote extensive time, to public education on this subject. Participants from sector organizations such as Bulk Oil Storage and Transport, Association of Oil Marketing Companies, Parliamentary Select Committee on Mines and Energy, Public Interest and Accountability Committee, Consumer Protection Agency and sector NGOs are expected to attend.

The entire programme will be broadcast live on Starr 103.5 FM between 2.30pm and 5:00pm.

The Starr FM Summit is supported by Unicredit – Your Caring Partner.
