VGMA 2015 ‘UNSUNG’ Category Nominees A Mismatch For Koo Ntakra – Papa Quasy Writes

After the release of the 2015 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards UNSUNG category nominees which has become very prominent in the annual awards scheme ever since its introduction last year by GHone TV, there has been various views expressed by the general public over the nominees, of which I have also critically analysed it in my own perspective.

The announcement which raised several eyebrows especially on social media as to the overlook of certain names, which many thought, if not deserved the main awards nominations, should have been in this enviable category has as well gained more public attention.

As a music lover, as well as an entertainment publicist over the years, I have had the privilege to work, write and see many of our young artistes grow from the underground to becoming main stream artiste in the industry, giving me a fair idea to analyse such a category for the prestigious Ghana Music Awards.

It is no doubt, the six names unveiled as nominees for the said category don’t deserve their place in there, but as to who really stands out is the major decision for many out there to take, but going through each one’s profile and work over the past year, am highly convinced out of, Nero X, Dark Suburb, Mz Yankey, Kingz Kid and Luther, Koo Ntakra, the former MTN Hitmaker stands tall.
The young Akuapeam rapper, who won the 2nd season of telecom giant MTN Hitmaker reality show in 2013, has an enviable record of which none of his competitors in that category come close to. It’s on record, the young lad is the first reality show winner in Ghana to have released an album within the first year after winning the competition, of which featured not only local artiste but also went on to feature an international art on his debut album.

Apart from this, Koo has been a consistent performer on almost all the major concerts within that said period, one that none of his competitors come close to; from performing in front of the former president of the republic, on ‘Legends & Legacy’ concert, to performing alongside not only the big guns and legends in the Ghanaian music industry but as well some of the big names on the African music industry, on the ‘GH Meet Naija’ stage, Afrobeat Weekend, GMW All Stars Concert among many others.

Others will argue out, these big stages he performed on, mostly have been MTN sponsored concerts of which their brand cannot be excluded, but I will say, it needs an hardworking and a good performer to constantly be recognised and given that opportunity, after all Koo Ntakra isn’t the first Hitmaker winner, or the only MTN music brand, but his performances has gained him more stages, not to talk of the other stages which wasn’t sponsored by MTN; the AfroBeat Weekend, Ofm Xmas concerts, Dynamite Tours among others.

Besides these, the Powase man has received lots of rotation on radio for not only one tune but several across the length and breadth of the country.

All the above mentioned, among many others simply prove the fact that, the versatile rapper, is ahead of his competitors in the VGMA 2015 Unsung category, not only with hits but for anyone to consistently perform on the highest level among the big guns is to prove his pedigree and even with the just ended nominees jam in Cape Coast, his electrifying performance testifies to the fact he deserves the nod ahead of the rest to rock the 16th edition of Ghana’s most prestigious awards.

Well we leave the faith of all nominees in the hands of the public, but for who can really rock that VGMA 2015 Stage, come April 11, one name readily comes to mind, and his no other than Koo Ntakra.
