GHANA DJ AWARDS WINNERS YET TO RECEIVE THEIR PLAQUES

The maiden edition of the Ghana DJ Awards was postponed at the latter part of last year, at the very last minute when people had gathered at  the National Theatre, with different accounts or stories about why the awards was postponed, given by Merqury at the venue and later on in a press release.

Fortunately, the event came on February 15, 2013 with so many inconsistencies. Some celebrities came to the awards to disgrace themselves, many artistes billed to perform never showed up, attendance wasn't the best, and many DJs who had been nominated for awards never showed up.

Thinking Merqury Republic, the organizers of the Ghana DJ Awards, would have put its house in order and ensure things are done rightly, it however seems Merqury Republic is still dancing ''shuperoo'' when the azonto craze is on. Is it not surprising to know that 30 or more days after the event, none of the award winners has received his or her plaque?

To make matters worse, Merqury Republic has not even had the courtesy to officially explain to the award winners why their plaques have delayed.

AGBEKO CROWNED THE NEW IBO BANTAMWEIGHT CHAMPION

Ghana’s Joseph King-Kong Agbeko has been crowned the new IBO Bantamweight Champion after beating Columbia’s Luis Melendez in 12 rounds of exciting exchanges.

The Ghanaian won by a unanimous decision with referee Deon Dwarte of South Africa scoring the bout 117-111, Ataa Eddie Pappoe of Ghana, 119-111 and Laten Oumgar of the Netherlands also scoring the bout 117-113.

It was quite a difficult tussle for the Ghanaian who made a return to the ring for the first time in 15 months and was made to sweat for the victory.

After a cautious start in the first round the two pugilists threw caution to the wind in the second and traded lots of punches much to the excitement of the partisan crowd.

But it was the Columbian who came strongly with a spirited performance, attacking from all angles but failing to exert power in his flurry of punches.

VGMA IS NOT CREDIBLE SO I DON'T TALK ABOUT IT - WUTAH KOBBY

The impending biggest event in Ghana Music, Vodafone Ghana Music Awards is still the topic of conversation on all Showbiz plat forms. From TV to Radio to Online media, analysis about the various categories are been sieved to know who deserves to win.

Last week Saturday on the popular Local Chat Show at Prime 89.1 FM, Wutah Kobby was the Artist Guest who graced the show. The humorous Presenter, Pasino with his usual piercing questions put Wutah Kobby into the hot seat.

Asking him his views on the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards and who in his opinion deserves to win various categories, Wutah Kobby in plain words, without any bush-beating spewed up that “Ghana Music is not credible so I don’t talk about it”.

Having won the Awards from the same organizers years back, Pasino asked him if during his reign in the group it was credible. He answered with a nod and vividly said “YES!”

To him, the Artist of the Year is an Asem deserving one with his love song ‘Tsotso’ deserving to be in the ‘Vodafone Song of the year’ category.  The acoustic-sound-alike voice, Wutah Kobby performed his popular songs live on air.

OKYEAME KWAME TALKS CHOREOGRAPHED HANDSHANKES & REFRESHING AZONTO FOR COCA COLA

Okyeame Kwame is adventurous, selfless and modest. His passion has brought him this far as he produces an interesting, energy-filled Coca Cola commercial that has choreographed handshakes and refreshing azonto. Over the week, the  story on the advert ‘Shake-up your senses’ had  many people talking and asking questions. Did he shoot it himself? Did he choreograph the handshakes and the dance? Well OK sat down for a Q&A as follows:

Q: Did you shoot the advert yourself?
A: I built the concept, produced it; finding the cast, costume and props, and location. But the actual shooting and editing was done by Gyo of Phamous Philms.

Q: How did the concept come to mind?
A: After the Versatile show, Coca-Cola, who were one of our sponsors were very happy about the show. As they are also about extreme creativity, they enjoyed what the versatile show stood for. They called us in and asked us to produce an ad for their ‘shake-up your senses’ communication. I started seeing images, ideas and hearing sounds that befitted the briefing the team gave me. I rearranged its complexity to a simple story-line that I believed would bring people together to share excitement

FREEDOM OF SPEECH UNDER NDC NOW IS BETTER THAN IT WAS UNDER NPP - A-PLUS

Controversial hiplife musician, Kwame Asare Obeng popularly known as A-Plus has said that Ghana is currently enjoying an atmosphere of freedom of speech than it did under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.

SONNIE BADU UNHAPPY WITH EVENT ORGANIZERS

Gospel artiste Sonnie Badu isn’t too enthused about how event organizers pay huge sums of money to foreign acts to perform in Ghana.

In series of tweets, he’s explained why he thinks it’s wrong for those killer sums to be paid, suggesting that the practice is almost equal to mental “slavery”.

“And those African who pay outsiders huge sums of money well done! It really shows that u have not been delivered from slavery. Have u ever seen them invite an African and paid the money you give to them!! Wake up!! They don’t even want to snap pictures with u. Shame.

"Our African mindset is so sad. There is no way on this earth that foreigners will pay Africans the kind of monies we pay them in African. Yet when they show up, u are not allowed 2 come near them can’t take pictures, they won’t do interviews but guess what that what we like. And after the show they leave quickly! Ha ha ha what a joke!!” he ridiculed

BYSSON RECORDINGS HOLDS BACK EFINE'S SONG

Public expectancy was escalated when word on the streets had it that the acclaimed best duet of the year ‘Down For Whatever’ by EFINE featuring award winning radio personality Joel Orleans aka J.O.E.L. of Y FM Ghana was being released on Thursday the 14th of March, but waters have been muddied as the hit has been withheld by Bysson Company.

Bysson Company which doubles as a record label and events production firm located in East Legon has been on the quiet for sometime now in the Ghanaian music industry whiles emitting very good productions.

‘Down For Whatever’ as the title goes is a song that beat the imagination of the CEO of Bysson Company and this proceeded into the proposal of a management deal, which was already initiated by Bysson Company to sign EFINE on to the label. Terms and conditions were debated and the conclusion transformed into a minor disagreement.

EFINE the ‘Stamina’ hit maker who is a Nigerian MCplying his music trade in Ghana proposed some terms which were quite ‘outrageous’ in nature to Bysson Company.EFINE as an international artist who just returned from a tour in South Africa amidst collaborations with Ice Prince, J Town, R2bees, Kas, Sarkodie etc requested for a car and a plush apartment aside the signing fee, which is contrary to the usual initial provisions of most Ghanaian ‘labels’.

POLICE COMMENCE INVESTIGATION INTO CHRIS BROWN WEED SMOKING CONTROVERSY

The Ghana Police have commenced investigations into allegations that American music star Chris Brown smoked “weed” on stage during his performance at the Hope City concert at the Accra Sports Stadium on March 5.

The act has received a lot of criticism from civil society organizations and the general public. Notable voices that have condemned the act include Minister of State and Member of Parliament for Wa Central, Rashid Pelpuo and Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra, Most Reverend Charles Palmer-Buckle.

Organizers of the concert, Charter House, categorically denied media reports that American music star smoked weed during his performance at the event. According to the events outfit, Chris Brown smoked a cigar, not marijuana.

A statement released by the police Monday and signed by DSP Cephas Arthur, Director of Public Affairs said the investigation has been necessitated by a complaint filed by Mr. Jonathan Osei-Wusu, CEO of POS Foundation.

The statement said, "The Police have commenced investigation into the formal complaint of Indian hemp smoking made by the CEO of POS Foundation, Mr. Jonathan Osei-Wusu on 6th March 2013 at the Ministries Police station against the popular American RnB artist Chris Brown."

UK DENIES VISA FOR BORN STARZ WINNER NERO-X

The UK High Commission has denied winner of Born Starz, Joseph Nkrumah Buabeng a.k.a Nero-X, visa to the country. Nero-X emerged winner of the Viasat1’s maiden talent show in January, and was to be on a 7-days trip to the UK, fully catered for by Viasat1 as part of his award package.

Citing the reasons for his refusal, the UK High Commission stated that although Nero-X had won the talent show and the trip was going to be paid for by Viasat 1 Broadcasting G Limited, “it is the intentions of the applicant that are paramount in considering any application.” It further stated that they are not sure Nero-X is seeking a genuine visit or intends to leave the UK at the end of his visit.

CEO of Viasat1, Charlotte Gustavsson, is not happy about the outcome. She said Viasat1 had made all arrangements ahead of the Born Starz winner’s trip to the UK , and was only waiting for the visa. She denied the idea that Nero-X would have absconded if granted the visa. She said “There was no way Nero-X was going to overstay his welcome in the UK, he has a busy schedule in Ghana to get back to. Born Starz is grooming his career here, together with Hiplife artiste Okyeame Kwame”

The CEO, however, said all hope is not lost, as Viasat1 still intends to go all out to present to Nero-X what he deserves. In a swift reaction, Viasat1 has arranged with UK top soul star J. Appiah and his management team in the UK to come to Ghana instead.

KOJO ANTWI CLAIMING HE IS AN AFRO-POP MUSICIAN IS FUNNY

After asking whether veteran musician Kojo Antwi is a highlife or reggae musician, the horse has come out to clear the air; “I am neither a reggae musician nor highlife musician. I am an Afro-pop musician,” said Kojo Antwi.

In your authoritative flex newspaper last week, I published an article which sought to ask whether veteran musician Kojo Antwi is a reggae musician or a highlife musician. Though I could not contact him as at the time of going to press for him to clear himself on the topic, the ever respected radio producer at Channel R 92.7 fm, Christian Agyei Frimpong, got in touch with the said musician; only for him to reveal to all and sundry that, he is neither a reggae musician nor a highlife musician but an Afro-pop musician.

Per my school of thought, I don't agree with Kojo Antwi claiming or tagging himself as an Afro-pop musician. First, Afro-pop is not a genre of music. The word 'Afro-pop' is used to describe music.  It is just like saying 'gospel music.'The word 'gospel' only describes the music, mostly, as music with religious tones. The simple explanation for 'Afro-pop song,' is a popular African music or song engineered with authentic African rhythms and beats or instrumentation in general.

Per simple music gumption derived from the explanation of what an Afro-pop music is, every highlife music which becomes popular (in many African countries), not only in Ghana; can be described as an Afro-pop music. Again, reggae is a music genre from Jamaica. Since Jamaicans are descendants from Africa, we can equally say that all popular reggae songs are Afro-pop music. Kojo Antwi is from Ghana. He can therefore be tagged or called one of two 'genre-known' forms of musicians, thus; highlife musician or reggae musician.

CHARTERHOUSE DENIES CHRIS BROWN SMOKED “WEED”

Following the furore resulting from an act of lighting what people suspect to be a “joint” by headline artist Chris Brown at the Hope City Concert last Tuesday, the organizers of the show, Charterhouse, have denied that the artist smoked marijuana live on stage.

According to Mrs Theresa Ayoade, Brown, as part of his act, which can be described as one of the most exciting stage shows ever to take place in Ghana, enacted a scene as he performed his song, Smoke Out The Brain in which he discussed the conflict that arises within a person when under pressure to do a vice like smoking, and to illustrate, lit up a slim cigar and pulled a symbolic puff.

As the conflict rage on within him, we overhear his voice and other songs urging him to go ahead and smoke, while his inner voice is also overheard through the loud speakers, saying “Chris, don’t, it can make you crazy!” He then symbolically goes ahead to ‘kill’ the lighted cigar by stepping on it, before falling to floor amid coughing. In the ensuring, it can be said that good triumphed over evil. Unfortunately, it was this action that many have misconstrued as Brown lighting and smoking marijuana in public.

“For the brief moment that Chris Brown stopped over in Accra for the concert, I can confirm that he comported himself. Indeed, his rider which spells out what he wants on the event night, listed strictly water and soda as his requirement, and spelled out ‘No alcohol’!” And, none was supplied to them. The cigar was only a prop he used as part of an act, which actually sort to caution against the smoking of “weed”.
