The Vice President of the Republic, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has inaugurated a seven-member Governing Board for the Major Mahama Trust Fund with a charge to the members to adhere to the tenets of Act 960 in applying the funds for the welfare of the wife and children of the late military officer.

Then Captain Maxwell Adam Mahama, who was part of an anti-galamsey task force, was lynched by a mob at Denkyira Obuasi in the Central Region on 29th May, 2018, who say they suspected he was a thief.

The gruesome murder shocked the entire nation, and led President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to promote him posthumously to Major, give him a State Burial and set up a Trust Fund to cater for his family and any other matters. President Akufo-Addo made a personal donation of Ghs50,000, while the State, after the passage by Parliament of the Major Mahama Trust Fund Act, 2017 (Act 960), has provided Ghs500,000.

The President also ordered the construction of a monument near Burma Camp to serve as a constant reminder to all Ghanaians not to indulge in such acts of shame and dishonour again.

After administering the Oaths of Office and Secrecy at the Jubilee House, Accra on Tuesday 29th May, 2018, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia charged the Board to be diligent in their service to the Trust Fund and the people of Ghana.

“The events leading to his untimely demise were regrettable and very much not reflective of the character of Ghanaians.  It is an occurrence that must not be repeated in our Nation.

“The loss of Major Maxwell Mahama to his family is immeasurable, particularly considering the future of his young wife and children… As members of the Trust Fund, I wish to advise you to adhere to the Act 960 in your work, particularly in applying the funds of the Trust Fund in your functions and responsibilities as members of the Board of Trustees.

“You are to perform your roles as a dutiful service to our Nation, Ghana and ensure that the aim and objects of this Trust Fund are achieved.”

Speaking on behalf of the Board, the Minister of Defence, Hon Dominic Nitiwul, expressed appreciation to the President and the Vice President for the confidence reposed in them, and pledged their commitment to ensuring the sustenance of the Trust fund.

Other members of the Board of Trustees for the Major Mahama Trust Fund are Hon Seth Kwame Acheampong, MP for Mpraeso and Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Defence and Interior; Hon James Agalga, MP for Builsa North and Ranking Member of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Defence and Interior; Kuoro Richard Babini Kanton VI, Paramount Chief of Tumu Traditional Area; Mrs Winifred Assibi Dy-Yakah; Madam Dorcas Ama Frema Coker-Parker; and Dr Evans Agbeme Dzikum, Chief Director at the Ministry of Defence.
