Accra Poly Beats KNUST To Win 2015 UPAC Basketball Championship

A dominant last quarter display from Accra Polytechnic saw them retain their title in the 2015 UPAC Basketball Championship after beating Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) 53-40 over the weekend.

In a real show of character and resilience, the defending champions underlined their credentials as the kings of the game at the tertiary level in Ghana with an enviable performance in the last quarter to secure victory.

Aliu Farahat Tamimu stole the show with his buzzer-beating layup to lift the defending champions after trailing by 12 points in the third quarter at the centre court of the University of Ghana. It came down to quick action by Accra Polytechnic coach Brimah Lawah and crisp execution by Romeo Wilfred Ennan and Aliu Farahat Tamimu.

It was always going to be difficult for KNUST after they lost their group game to the defending champions, losing by double-digits ahead of their final meeting. But the Kumasi-based side gave their opponent a good run for their money with a revitalized performance that made the crowd go gaga.

Enjoying massive support from the home fans, KNUST forced their opponent to commit several errors with Kwame Akrasi, Emmanuel Ekow Amoako, Nana Agyei and George Opare making the basketball count.

Accra Poly struggled to stop the resurgence of their opponent as a potential rare defeat starred them in the face. Surprisingly, or maybe not, Farahat was Accra Polytechnic hero with a sense of desperation to keep his team in contention. He was on the offense mood throughout his time on the floor, sparking the champions to a much-needed 53-40 victory

Farahat performed as never seen before, making five of his eight field goals attempts, converted two free-throws to go with 20 points. “It was a difficult and a sweet victory for us and I will say I am very happy for this win” Farahat told the media after the game.

“We fought very had even when we were down and that really shows the team spirit in us. I am very happy and will like to thank my teammates for this win.”

Accra Polytechnic coach Brimah Lawah admitted he has to dig deep to grab victory and poured massive praise on KNUST for their team spirit and effort.

“I will say we really met a good side and they showed they deserved to be in the finals,” he said

“They gave us a run for our money and I must admit they were a strong side.

“Congratulations to my boys for such an excellent performance. I will say kudos to them.”

University of Cape Coast completed the double over Marshalls University College to grab bronze in an entertaining contest.

The winner bagged home 2000 Ghana cedis and products from sponsors while the first runner up went home with a cash prize of 1000 with the third taking home 700 and products from sponsors.
