Members of popular Ghanaian dance group, Flash Mob Ghana stormed the studios of Radio Univers, an Accra-based radio station on Tuesday morning to express the annoyance in how some Ghanaian musicians disrespect dancers.
The dancers led by Moses Frimpong popularly known as Usher and Linda revealed that some Ghanaian musicians see dance in Ghana as a hobby but a profession in foreign countries so they see no essence in paying huge sums of money to hire them for their services. According to the angry dancers, musicians consider it as an opportunity for them (dancers) to be featured in their music videos and at events thereby paying them meager amount of money. They lamented that Ghanaian musicians pay as low as Gh5 to some dancers to be featured in their music videos or dance for them at events.
“Almost all the beautiful ladies you see in most of the music videos are not even paid. Some are paid Gh5 and the highest will be like Gh50. In fact it ranges from Gh5 to Gh50 but they forget that before you come on stage to perform, you’ve to rehearse and whenever you’re training, you’ve to eat and do other things and even after the show which mostly ends at 3:00am, you’ve to take dropping to your house because there will be no trotro available at that time of the night”
“They see dance to be a hobby in Ghana so they don’t see the reason why they should pay Gh300cedis for a person to perform for them but they will travel outside and pay thousands of dollars to foreign dancers”
The dancers pleaded with the host of the show, Brain Stromer to give them airtime on the show another day to have a face to face interaction with any Ghanaian musician who will call their allegations lies.
They mentioned hiplife musician Akoo Nana’s name and said “God will punish him” and continued that “Castro is one of the few musicians who travel outside Ghana with dancers because he cares about us. Castro knows dancers make his performance look good so he doesn’t joke with us.”
The Flash Mob dancers blamed the eager-to-work-with-celebrity dancers for the disrespect musicians show them.
“When they come to us and we reject their money, you see somebody taking Gh20 and Gh30 from them because the person thinks she is working with a musician.’
They also shared the agony they go through during events.
“You will go for an event and dancers will be sitting at the backstage. They won’t even allow you to go out and urinate because if you leave, you can’t get inside again – where is your ticket or tag? If you witness how dancers are shouted at during event, it’s pathetic.”
They pleaded with Ghanaian musicians to give them the necessary respect as they portray to foreign dancers.
