The issue of Nigerian music dominating the airwaves of Ghana has come
under scrutiny once again and this time the call is not from an artiste
but an actress.
Beverly Afaglo, a Ghanaian actress, has bemoaned the apparent
favoritism of Nigerian songs over those from Ghana by radio presenters
and disc jockeys.
Speaking on Peace FM’s ‘Entertainment Review Show’ last
Saturday, Beverly, who is married to Eugene Baah of Praye Fame, said it
was a rarity to hear Nigerian radio stations play hip life/Ghanaian songs
on their airwaves.
“I have been to Nigeria a lot of times and you hardly hear songs from
Ghana being played,” she said. “Some few clubs and pubs choose to play
Ghana songs”.
This development, in her view, had often led to some artistes trying
to sound like Nigerians just to get airplay and that “doesn’t help the
growth of the music industry”.
She cited the difficulty rapper Trigmatic had in getting interviews when he once visited Nigeria.
According to her, VIP and Tic Tac enjoyed some level of airplay in
Nigeria because they either featured some Nigerian artistes or had
partnerships with some Nigerian labels.
In her estimation, lack of support for Ghanaian music would
ultimately not augur well for the industry and appealed to radio
stations to promote Ghana music.- enewsghana
